Deception

Among the things that rob me of time from the written word, the choice of career path is definitely on top of the list. Aah, yes, I'm talking about you, Dentistry.

As a dental student shy of graduation only 2 years from now, I do wonder from time to time if I had made the correct decision in making my career choice. It is undeniable that the dental profession remains highly under-appreciated, especially so since I live in a third world country where many of the citizens are toothless--and happy. However, it is to be noted that the apparent lack of dental education in the country is not limited only to the majority of the masses, as recent events in my life have shown that even my friend (already a graduate of her own college course) was surprised that dentists have these things called "regulated licensure examinations". Apparently, she assumed we get labelled as doctors of dental medicine by just going through six years of college.

Dentistry is an art and science that is deceptively simple. Your tooth hurts, and we make the pain go away. Its true scope however, the depth and expanse of expertise and techniques in Dentistry, can only be realized by the same people who have chosen to take such a career path.

I must admit, when I was younger, the only thing I knew about dentists were that I go in for a cleaning, I go home, and the dentist earns quite a sum of money in just about 15 minutes. So enamored was I of this simple "pay for a service" system that I had always kept being a dentist in my mind as the years passed. What can I say, this was the only time my good oral hygiene gave me a disadvantage because I could not realize back then that the dentist gave much more services than merely oral prophylaxis, restorations of cavities and chipped off teeth, and the extraction of impacted third molars (which are, by the by, the only things any of my family members experienced in a dental clinic haha). Boy, did I have a ball when I learned restoring cavities didn't mean just punching out holes in teeth with a drill and slabbing on some amalgam on it! And doubly exciting was the creation of complete and partial dentures, and full crowns! (Hint: sarcasm on last two sentences.)

Out of curiosity, I have asked quite a number of my fellow classmates in dental school whether they have felt regret or are regretting taking up Dentistry. Surprise, surprise! Everyone I asked said yes. It's quite funny, really.

I do think that any newcomer to the profession would be overwhelmed, myself included. Actual professional and licensed dentists, those who have been seasoned by age and experience, make being in the dental profession look so easy and effortless, something to look up to. One day, I hope to be like them. But for now, I still need to continue to learn the ropes as I've only done 1 semester's worth of clinics in my school--sans the Prosthodontics requirements, haha. (See you in summer school, Prostho!)

I must admit however, despite the hours spent on the dental chair, earning an ache in the shoulder by the end of a finished restoration or the cramp on the legs after I've successfully extracted a tooth with stand-up dental surgery... I cannot help but feel a sense of accomplishment every time I complete my work. It's that type of muscle pain that validates the worth of the work you've done (comparable to that of working out in the gym), and it keeps me going.

Inset: A friend and I unwind in the mountains as we try our hand at ziplining after Finals week. It was definitely worth the second one-hundred pesos to experience ziplining upside down.

New Photoshop Trick: Vintage Look

Yes, in the middle of my not arranging the review of related literature of my thesis, I learned a new photoshop trick!

I've always wanted to know how amazeballs photographers get that certain vintange tinge in their photos.

The picture I selected for this totally random photoshop exercise is a favorite of mine, taken from my 2010 Singapore trip. Despite the plastic bag I'm holding and the awkward foot lift because we were running late for our bus pick-up, I had to stop and get a picture of the lovely Sentosa scenery. Plus I was coaching my mom the whole time on how to use the digital camera, lol.

Before.

After!

Cute, no? Photoshop, I ♥ you! Will probably be making a bajillion photographs into vintage so that the method gets drilled into my brain. Hoho~

P.S. Image quality was effed up by blogspot, will get a better image host soon.
P.P.S. If you wanna learn how to do this, click here for a tutorial. :)

It's midterms week... and I have a cold.

Had two midterm exams today... Principles of Medicine, and Surgery.

Gah. Just typing that down made me cringe.

Let's just say, it didn't go so well. Hahaha :))

You know how you shouldn't compare yourself with other people, but secretly, deep down inside, you do it anyway? Yeah, kinda did that recently so I have this feeling of suckyness at the moment. I haven't been studying like I used to. Among other things, the power of the rainy weather compels me to sleep before I should. And well, there's also the fact that the only place I can study in my room is my bed ----and oh wait, that's right. I can't study there.

I'm currently in my fifth year of college, graduating in 2012. The rest of my high school batchmates are either studying for their board exams, are already working, or unemployed (hee). What a nice feeling it must be, to be free from school and starting a new chapter in life? I am indeed, a little bit jealous. But hey, at least I'll be free in 2012. As for those who are taking Medicine... well, nevermind. Haha.

So in an attempt to raise my grades, I went out yesterday to Bo's Coffee at I.T. Park. That relatively small coffee shop is like the unofficial study center for the students of my school. It was crammed full with people from different colleges. Most of them though, were Dentistry students (and they were my classmates, and even ex-classmates, to boot!). Funny thing is, (well at least, to me) was that most of these students, including myself, bought only one drink and we stayed there for what, minimum 6 hours? ...Thus is the life, of a 24-hour coffee shop... and the students who are on a budget that leech from it.

Ramblings aside, I have been meaning to make a new blog for some time now. I guess I've been missing it. My writing skills have degraded to almost crap, and it makes me a little sad. :'c So here's to hoping that I can improve my skills! I'll be writing down, if time permits, the silly and mundane dentistry adventures I'll be having. I have, after all, just turned into a student clinician last June. :p More posts to come!

P.S. I do not own the above image, just did a quick google image search.
